Garner's goal lift Mustangs past West

Taylor Garner scored two goals in the third period and Jack Straub was strong in goal Friday to lift the Chugiak Mustangs to a 3-1 win over West in the third-place game of the Cook Inlet Conference hockey tournament at Ben Boeke Arena.

The victory makes the Mustangs the No. 3 seed from the CIC at next week’s state hockey tournament. West will be the No. 4 seed.

Straub tallied 36 saves, including 15 in the first period and 13 in the second. Joe Chekan stopped 18 for West.

West led 1-0 on Dmitry Hamm’s goal about six minutes  into the second period.

Chugiak tied it with a goal from William Casey with about four minutes left in the period.

Garner supplied the game-winner five minutes into the third period. He struck again with 66 seconds left.
