Isles F Nielsen has broken hand

Melville, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - New York Islanders forward Frans Nielsen will be taking the Olympic break to recover from a broken hand.

Newsday reported on Tuesday that Nielsen suffered a non-displaced fracture of his left hand when slashed by Avalanche defenseman Erik Johnson in last Saturday's 5-2 home loss to Colorado.

The paper provided no solid timetable for return, but speculated Nielsen may miss the first week after the league resumes play following the Sochi games.

Johnson was part of a phone hearing with the NHL's office of player safety for his actions, and the league announced that he received a two-game suspension.
