UAA's Chelimo shatters 5,000-meter conference record

UAA senior Micah Chelimo shaved more than three seconds off his 5,000-meter conference record Friday at the Husky Classic in Seattle.

Chelimo set a Great Northwest Athletic Conference indoor track record with a time of 13 minutes, 47.73 seconds. He bettered the mark of 13:51.19 he set a year ago.

The defending NCAA Division II champion in the 5,000 meters, Chelimo on Friday placed 10th in a field of Division I runners.

His time is the fastest of the season in Division II.

Teammate Joyce Kipchumba ran the fastest 5,000 women’s time in Division II on Friday, posting a time of 16:49.59.
