Letter: Protect Bristol Bay permanently

February 20, 2014

I applaud Sen. Begich taking a stand to oppose the Pebble mine — the wrong mine in the wrong place — based on the Environment Assessment conducted by EPA. I urge EPA to exercise its authority under the Clean Water Act to permanently protect Bristol Bay, its remarkable fisheries and the economic benefits which flow from this renewable natural resource.

Should politics (not science) dictate that EPA not act further, all is not lost. We need to keep in mind that the scientific studies conducted contain a wealth of scientific data, analysis and conclusions. These studies established a standard against which state permitting authorities will be forced to compare, evaluate and approve/disapprove Pebble’s submissions. EPA’s work also provides the public a means to evaluate, question and, if necessary, contest the rigor of the state’s processes and the soundness of its decisions.
