FAIRBANKS, Alaska — Officials at Eielson Air Force Base say heating has been restored at homes on base, days after they lost services.
The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner (http://is.gd/47sYTY) says about 100 homes lost heat Saturday because of leaks in the steam pipe system.
The number of affected homes doubled as engineers tried to fix the problem.
A temporary fix on the pipes was completed Wednesday morning. That restored most homes to near normal heating levels.
Officials say engineers will continue to work on a permanent solution.
During the outage, about 70 families received free housing at the Goldrush Inn.
Area families are urged not to drink water for now because it still needs to be tested.
Water is available through Friday at the flight kitchen of Eielson's dining facility.
