Police arrest parents of newborn taken from hospital
Anchorage police have arrested two parents accused of fleeing a hospital Tuesday with their 3-day-old boy when social workers attempted to check on the baby. State social workers now have the child.

Sanford elected mayor in Juneau; Hopkins re-elected in Fairbanks borough
Juneau voters picked former Assemblyman Merrill Sanford to replace Bruce Botelho, who was prohibited by term limits from running again. In the Fairbanks North Star Borough, incumbent Mayor Luke Hopkins won a second three-year term with more than 51 percent of the vote.

Woman's body discovered in Anchorage church parking lot
A death investigation is under way after passers-by discovered the body of a woman lying in the parking lot of a Turnagain Street church Tuesday morning. Police initially described the case as a homicide investigation.

Court temporarily halts Mat-Su rail extension
A federal appeals court has halted work on the Port MacKenzie railroad extension in Mat-Su pending a full hearing on the case. The decision is a win for conservationists, who argued that they -- and the environment -- would suffer irreparable harm from the extension.

Las Vegas man pleads guilty to Alaska drug conspiracy
A Las Vegas man accused of illegally transporting prescription painkillers to Alaska faces 15 years in prison in a plea deal. Nicholas Ghafouria is also being ordered to turn over about $1.2 million in cash and property he gained in the operation.

Alaska voter registration deadline is Sunday
The deadline to register to vote for next month's general election is Sunday. Registration forms can be downloaded at www.elections.alaska.gov and submitted by email, fax or mail. Five regional offices will be open for in-person registration.
