Online news sites vie for Alaskans' attention

Link: Juneau Empire "Alaska's news consumers are getting a boost from new Web sites that are in some cases going beyond commenting on stories produced by established news media and are hiring reporters to produce their own news," the Empire writes. Alaska Dispatch and Anchorage Daily Planet are two that are hiring reporters and hope to make a profit, while The Alaska Standard's Dan Fagan says his site will stick with commentary: "Reporters are too expensive," said Fagan, an Anchorage radio talk show host and Daily News columnist. The Daily Planet is operating out of an Anchorage PR firm's offices and is edited by Paul Jenkins, once employed by the former oil-services company Veco for its right-leaning Voice of the Times spread in the Anchorage Daily News. Alaska Dispatch is edited by Tony Hopfinger, formerly of the Anchorage Press and ADN, with a recent infusion of cash from new publisher and majority owner Alice Rogoff of Maryland, a former Washington Post Co. exec with an interest in Alaska Native arts and culture.
