Kenai beavers delight neighbors, worry road crews

Link: Peninsula Clarion Residents of a Kenai neighborhood are angry at Fish and Game over plans to trap up to 15 beavers whose dam-building in culverts is threatening to cause millions of dollars' worth of damage to roads. Several families of beavers moved into the area this summer, to the delight of neighbors, but trouble soon followed. "They plugged up the culverts to where they were under 10 feet of water. It was filtrating through the embankment causing slope failures and problems in the storm drain system as well," said a state DOT spokesman. The Kenai Peninsula Trappers Association has been given the go-ahead to harvest the beavers. Fish and Game says it's too late in the season to relocate the animals.
