Kenai drivers, beware: Caribou on the move

Link: Peninsula Clarion Caribou are on the move again on the Kenai Peninsula, and that creates yet another hazard for motorists already plagued by moose on the roads. "They're moving from their summer range ... to their winter range," said Rick Ernst, a biologist with the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. Nine caribou in the small Kenai Lowlands Herd were fitted with GPS collars a few years ago and their wanderings tracked. Seven of them crossed roads a total of 84 times (the article includes a map of the northwest Peninsula showing where the caribou go). "Approximately four caribou are killed each year in vehicle collisions," Ernst said. "People -- tourists and locals alike -- enjoying seeing them, so it would be great if that herd could continue to be around."
