Revived moose hunt draws out Bethel-area hunters

Link: The Tundra Drums The first lower Kuskokwim River moose hunt in years drew crowds of hunters in September. "We had a lot of hunting pressure," said Phillip Perry, area wildlife biologist for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. "Hunters we talked to said, ‘Holy cow, there was a lot of people out.' " Five years ago, the hunt was ended when the moose population dropped below 100 animals. This season, hunters reported bagging 106 bulls, a number that pleased Perry because it leaves plenty of bulls and cows for future hunts. There are an estimated 1,000 moose in the region now.
