Link: The Northern Light, UAA Pat Leary, a landscaper at the University of Alaska Anchorage, didn't arrange for the first rock to be placed 15 years ago in what has become known as the UAA Rock Garden, but as the "exhibits" continued to arrive, she took charge of their placement and the landscaping around them. "It was really fun to all put together," Leary says. Among the better-known items in the garden are a hunk of zinc-lead silver ore from the Red Dog Mine, formed on an ancient sea floor and weighing 3,087 pounds, and several large specimens of 60-plus-million-year-old petrified wood from a subtropical forest in what is now the Matanuska Valley.
