Fund to help Cheseto cover debt

The University of Alaska Anchorage athletic department has established a fund to help runner Marko Cheseto with the staggering debt that resulted from his medical emergency and amputation in November.

The greatest team performance in UAA track and field history was capped Saturday night by one of the grandest individual performances in the program's history -- junior Micah Chelimo seized the men's 5,000 meters at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Pueblo, Colo.

For the first 28 years of his life, Marko Cheseto's feet carried him, from a small village in the mountains of western Kenya to America, where he won race after race, becoming one of the most accomplished runners in UAA history. Then came the suicide of a cousin -- really more like a brother -- from his village, someone Cheseto himself had recruited to UAA running.

UAA athletes went 3 for 3 in All-America finishes Friday, when steeplechasers Micah Chelimo and Susan Tanui racked runner-up finishes and heptathlete Kelsea Johnson rocketed up the standings at the Division II NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Pueblo, Colo.

5 Seawolves reach championship finals

UAA's distance demons got off to a strong start at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday, when juniors Susan Tanui and Micah Chelimo won their 3,000-meter preliminary steeplechase heats to lead five Seawolves who advanced to finals.

The UAA volleyball team's invitational tournament, which has been played under several titles in school history and was absent from the schedule last season, will return this fall with a new sponsor and name.

New UAA women's coach has winning ways

UAA on Tuesday announced the hiring of Nathan Altenhofen, 40. He replaces Tim Moser, who resigned earlier this month after taking the Seawolves to six straight NCAA tournaments, and three Elite Eights. Moser earlier this week took an assistant coaching job at Division I Colorado State.

UAA men's basketball announced the addition of a versatile forward Thursday. Mike Mackelvie has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Seawolves next season.

UAA adds three skiers

Service High's John Glenn is among a trio of nordic skiers who have agreed to ski for UAA next season, coach Sparky Anderson announced Thursday. Marine Dusser of France and Patricia Sprecher of Switzerland will join the women's team.

Micah True was an almost mythical ultramarathoner. He was a lone wanderer of the High Sierras. To many, the 58-year-old who died while out on a run represented the road not taken, a purer path, away from career, away from capitalism, away from the clock.
