HOCKEY: Badgers outclaw Seawolves for 6-2 victory.
The rigors of the road keep haunting UAA in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.
Wisconsin erupted for four third-period goals and tripled the Seawolves' shots on goal Saturday night to collect a 6-2 victory and a series sweep at the Kohl Center in Madison.
The Seawolves, who fell 5-1 to the Badgers on Friday, are 0-4-0 in league road matches and have been outscored 20-5.
They also were outgunned, 42-13, by the Badgers. It's probably not any consolation, but UAA's 29-shot deficit wasn't even the worst in the league Saturday -- Minnesota-Duluth's 8-1 demolition of visiting Michigan Tech included a 48-18 advantage in shots.
In any event, UAA and Michigan Tech are tied for eighth place in the 10-team league, with Minnesota State-Mankato the only team below them. Mankato visits Sullivan Arena next weekend for a series against UAA.
The Seawolves (4-8-0, 2-6-0 WCHA) have lost five of their last six games, all in the league, and the Badgers (6-3-1, 4-3-1) have won five of their last six.
Aside from Josh Lunden's two goals, one a short-handed strike, there weren't many bright spots for the Seawolves other than holding the Badgers to a 2-1 lead through two periods.
Wisconsin pushed the advantage to 3-1 on Patrick Johnson's goal less than three minutes into the third period. Lunden countered with his second goal of the night, the shortie, four minutes later. Yet Wisconsin's Craig Smith responded just 66 seconds later to give the Badgers a 4-2 cushion.
Justin Schultz added an empty-net goal and Ben Street punctuated Wisconsin's dominance with his second goal of the game just 12 seconds from the buzzer.
Even UAA's only lead was short-lived.
Lunden struck at 15:32 of the first period to open the scoring and take the announced crowd of 13,612 out of the game -- for all of 11 seconds. Street scored almost immediately off the ensuing face-off.
The Seawolves are 0-8-0 in Madison in coach Dave Shyiak's four-plus seasons as bench boss and are 1-12-1 against the Badgers in that span.
UAF triumphs 5-3
Ninth-ranked UAF battled back from Friday's loss to earn a 5-3 Central Collegiate Hockey Association win at Bowling Green on Saturday.
Dion Knelsen bagged two goals for the Nanooks (7-2-1), including the clinching empty netter.
Jarret Granberg, a freshman, added one goal and two assists for UAF, which also got a goal from defenseman Cody Butcher of Anchorage.
The Nanooks are fourth in the 12-team CCHA.
