CAMP KUSHTAKA

  • Goals and activities: This camp offers a wonderful setting for campers to enjoy hiking, archery, canoeing, horseback riding, outdoor skills, overnights away from camp, music, drama and arts and crafts. CAMP TOGOWOODS

  • Sponsor: Girl Scouts Susitna Council
  • Goals and activities: Camp Togowoods is nestled under birch trees at the edge of Three Mile Lake, in the shadows of the Talkeetna Mountains 50 miles north of Anchorage. The camp has programs for all kinds of girls: the artist, the naturalist, the adventurer and the water enthusiast, to name a few. Outdoor skills, kayaking, arts/pottery, mushing (on wheels), hiking, campfires and more are offered.

COLONY JROTC SUMMER CAMP

  • Sponsor: Colony High School JROTC
  • Ages: Colony High School JROTC students entering grades 9-12
  • Goals and activities: The primary focus is on leadership and "followship" principles and completing a variety of training tasks such as rappelling, airborne jump tower, rifle marksmanship, land navigation and orienteering. Students receive a sweat suit, T-shirt, hat, military dog tags and the loan of uniforms for the camp.

WILDERNESS ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES GROUP

  • Sponsor: Prince William Sound Science Center
  • Ages: 16-17
  • Goals and activities: This exciting backpacking camp leads teens on an exploration of remote areas of Prince William Sound ‘‘to see the world as you’ve never seen it before.’’ Hike along beaches, through rainforests and across alpine tundra. Participants will gain a better understanding of the natural world through hands-on exploration, study and reflection. As part of a team, they will learn backpacking and no-trace camping skills, along with ‘‘wilderness etiquette.’’

YMCA PEGGY LAKE CAMP

  • Sponsor: Anchorage Community YMCA
  • Ages: 8-16, varies by session
  • Goals and activities: YMCA Camp Peggy Lake, located on 320 acres of rustic wilderness, is a non-denominational, residential camp for boys and girls. The traditional camp program activities include swimming, canoeing, arts and crafts, archery, riflery, hiking and nature activities. Campers make friends by living, learning and playing together in an atmosphere where honesty, respect, caring and responsibility are highlighted. Kids have the opportunity to develop their skills, learn about themselves and others, and have fun while participating in a variety of activities in a unique outdoor environment.
