Dear Advertiser,

On January 1, 2001, we will join more than 150 newspapers including the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, the Denver Post, the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Oregonian and USA Today, in adopting a new industry standard size.

We are reinventing the American newspaper for the 21^st Century, and want our insert customers to reap the rewards. To take full advantage of this change, we ask you to make sure that the mechanical size of your insert conforms to the new measurements, which I have enclosed for your review.

On Monday, January 1, we will adjust the size of the Anchorage Daily News, making it slightly narrower, easier and handier to use and more reader-friendly. Here's why:

• First, the new dimensions should make the newspaper easier to carry, hold and fold. The easier it is to use, the more time readers should spend with the paper and your insert advertising.

• Second, if we make readers happy, we will keep producing results for advertisers. Our readers are the prospects who are ready, willing and able to buy your products.

• Third, readers across the country say they like the new size. Nationally samples of newspaper readers were asked what they thought of the new size. Nineteen percent were neutral and 1 percent preferred the old size. But 80 percent said they really like the enhancement. In fact, they used the terms "easier to hold, handle…more convenient…just easier to use."
