Over the past couple months, Alaska Pacific University President Douglas M. North has announced three new degree programs that will begin this fall semester – a global finance specialization in the master of business administration, a marine biology and policy concentration and a master of arts degree.

Developed in partnership with local investment advisory firm McKinley Capital Management, Inc., the global finance concentration is a set of graduate courses designed to train students in the most modern and effective types of portfolio analysis and portfolio fund management.

Support from McKinley includes a Bloomberg Terminal for live market information from around the globe plus technical support, guest lecturers, internships and expertise on curriculum development.

The marine biology coursework is an addition to the environmental science program and was funded by a $280,000 gift from the At-Sea Processors Association. The money was used to hire two new faculty members plus support for research and activities.

Students looking for a non-traditional approach to completing a graduate degree might consider the new self-directed master of arts program. It requires 36 credits of coursework to be completed in a three phase individualized contract learning format.

"It’s perfect for the individual who wants a new academic challenge where they can create something fresh and innovative," North said.

Research, practicum and development opportunities make up the three phases. A thesis or project is also required. Students are teamed up with a faculty mentor and committee to come up with a course design and study plan.

The university also offers a degree completion program for working adults. Students can finish their accounting, organizational management, human services and tourism managements degrees on campus.

Interested applicants can find out more about these new programs by contacting the Office of Admissions at 907-564-8248 or by e-mail at admissions@alaskapacific.edu.

Colleges looking for high school seniors

Honors students now have a chance to start college early. APU will begin offering an "Early Honors Program" this fall, allowing seniors to complete their high school curriculum and graduate from the Anchorage School District plus receive two semesters of college credit.

The idea is to allow students ready to move on, but not necessarily out of the house, an alternative to their senior year in high school. APU President Douglas M. North described it as a springboard into college.

Students enroll their first semester as if they were college freshmen but in classes that also satisfy senior level requirements at ASD. During the first part of the second semester, they can take an intensive study abroad experience. When they return, classes continue on campus. Each will also do a capstone project or exercise designed to teach skills necessary for excellence in college.

The University of Alaska Anchorage also offers a similar program called LEAP. For more information on their program, contact Larry Michaels 786-4714.
