265 miles by hand

Hand cyclist Carlos Moleda of Virginia Beach, Va., pounded the hills outside Ester in the first stage of July's Midnight Sun Ultra Challenge on the Parks Highway. Ziv Bar-Shira of Israel overtook Moleda to win the stage by 19 seconds and the race by 43 seconds. "I kept accelerating, trying to burn him out," defending champion Moleda said. "It wasn't enough." The two were among the 22 wheelchair and hand-cycle racers who left Fairbanks to race 265 miles to Anchorage. In the wheelchair competition, Kenny Carnes of Snellville, Ga., took an early 40-plus-minute lead and never looked back, winning in 20 hours, 35 minutes and 50 seconds. (Photo by Erik Hill)
