When wildlife runs wild

A black bear and her cub fattened up for the winter in late August
in Eagle River's South Fork valley. Human-bear conflicts have grown in
the Anchorage area thanks in part to a bruin baby boom and young bears
associating people with an easy meal. In the past 10 years, 90 black bears
have been shot as nuisances or hit by vehicles inside Anchorage's populated
areas. During summer 2000, more than 500 reports of bears roaming neighborhoods
reached the Department of Fish and Game. (Photo by Evan R. Steinhauser)
