Once bitten

John Stenglein and a friend were playing on the edge of an Icy Bay
logging camp last April when a wolf appeared. The playmates began to run,
but John went only about 20 feet before the wolf caught him and bit him.
John received stitches and staples for 15 puncture wounds and seemed to
be recovering. But two days later, an infection landed him in an Anchorage
hospital, where he described the attack and held a photo of the wolf,
which was shot after the attack. (Photo by Jim Lavrakas)
