It
was an anonymous bomb threat, not a Y2K meltdown, that shut the New Year's
Eve party down -- for a while. About 90 minutes before midnight, police
cleared the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts and adjacent Town Square
to investigate the threat. Two hours later, they'd found nothing. In the
meantime, some revelers refused to be scared off and pulled the 7-foot
Millennium Drum into Town Square, where they were joined by thousands
to greet the new year. (Photo by Jim Lavrakas)
