FRIDAY'S GAMES

Pilots, BUCS split

The Pilots and Bucs stayed atop their respective divisions by splitting a Fourth of July doubleheader that provided plenty of fireworks at Mulcahy Stadium, with the Pilots winning the opener 5-0 and the Bucs taking the nightcap 4-3.

The Pilots belted two home runs in their win, and the Bucs did the same in theirs.

Max Karnos of Anchorage picked up the victory for the Pilots, throwing a six-hit, complete-game shutout. He fanned four over seven innings.

All of the Pilots' runs were scored on home runs. Clayton Taylor homered for the fifth time this summer, a fourth-inning leadoff shot that put the Pilots up 1-0. The Pilots put the game away in the seventh and final inning with Riley Adams' grand slam, which followed two singles and a walk.

The Bucs came back in the late game, buoyed by Dylan Butler's leadoff homer in the fifth and Gage West's one-out solo shot in the seventh.

Travor Lacosse pitched a 10-strikeout gem for the Bucs, allowing two runs on three hits over six innings.

Oilers 9, Miners 6

Alex Rubanowitz drove in two runs and scored three times to lead the Oilers past Mat-Su. He singled, doubled and homered.

Cameron Newell sparked Mat-Su with his fifth home run of the season, a bases-empty blast that gave him a league-high 23 RBIs.

Panners, Chinooks split

The Goldpanners and Chinooks split a holiday doubleheader in Chugiak. Fairbanks won the first game 6-2 and the Chinooks bounced back to take the second game 9-8.

Mike Benson ran his record to 3-0 with a three-hit, six-inning effort for the Panners in the first game. Scott Hurst had a leadoff homer to fuel Fairbanks' three-run fourth inning.

In the nightcap, Chugiak erupted for seven runs in the fifth inning, during which Fairbanks pitchers twice hit batters with the bases loaded. The big hits that inning where Jackson Cramer's RBI double and William Arendt's run-scoring single. Arendt was 3 for 4 with two runs and an RBI.

Brandon Caruso and Vahn Bozoian were both 2 for 3 for the Goldpanners. Caruso scored three times and Bozoian drove in three runs.
