Precious little asphalt paves Alaska but what highways do exist in the 49th state are among the most scenic to be found anywhere in the U.S.

Four of Alaska's six National Scenic Byways or All-American Roads just got a federal boost to maintain their natural, historic, cultural and recreational endowments -- qualities that entice tourists from across the continent to pack up motor-homes and head north.

A total of $714,157 in grants will be divvied among the Southcentral and Southeast roadways, according to a statement by the Alaska Scenic Byways program.
