A press release from AT&T (via PRNewswire) announces that the company spent $650 million from 2009 to 2011 to upgrade the coverage and overall performance of its wired and wireless communication networks in Alaska.
In 2011, the company made 300 individual Alaska wireless network upgrades in four categories:
- Activating 15 new cell sites or towers to improve network coverage.
- Deploying faster fiber-optic connections to more than 110 cell sites.
- Adding capacity or an extra layer of frequency to cell sites - like adding lanes to a highway - with the addition of more than 140 of these layers, or "carriers."
- Upgrading nearly 30 cell sites to provide fast mobile broadband speeds.
"Our goal is to deliver a network experience that mobilizes everything for customers," said Mike Maxwell, vice president and general manager, AT&T. "The ongoing investment we're making in Alaska is designed to increase coverage and reliability, and to provide advanced 4G services to our customers."
The upgrades in Alaska are part of an ongoing national campaign to meet rapidly rising demand for mobile voice and data services.
