Comment period open on Denali vehicle management plans

The National Park Service opened to public comments a draft of alternative vehicle access plans for Denali National Park on Aug. 1. In recent seasons, the park has been popular enough to rub against the maximum limit, set in 1986, of vehicles allowed on the park's only interior road. The Park Service has proposed two alternatives to the status quo and is seeking comment from the public. Keeping things as-is is Alternative A, but there are two others. Denali Park planner Miriam Valentine summarized the plans to MSNBC's Overhead Bin travel blog: "Alternative B maximizes the visitor capacity of the park, with larger buses visiting one section of the park." said Denali park planner Miriam Valentine. "Alternative C maximizes the visitor experience by creating more tour products and adding a new, remote, wildlife-viewing zone." Read Valentine's introductory letter to the plan, here, and download or comment on the full draft vehicle management plan, here. The deadline for comments is Sept. 30.
