National Weather Service says snowfall at its office set record for Dec. 12

The National Weather Service (via Facebook) is reporting its Sand Lake headquarters was smacked with a 8.5 inches of snow, a record for Dec. 12. And the weather wizards are asking residents throughout the state of Alaska to report how much snow has fallen in their neck of the woods.

According to NWS, photos and reports of state snowfall will help assist with weather advisories and warnings now and in the future, ultimately providing better service to communities around Alaska. The NWS writes:

Facebook users report snowfall totals beneath the post itself (which, by itself, technically isn't an official submission of data). Reports from the Fairbanks area Wednesday say that 5 inches fell overnight and 10 inches fell in the last two days. (Which, to be sure, is rather significant for the Interior.)

Anectdotal snowfall reports on Facebook from around Southcentral were much more variable. People in Eagle River and Soldotna were reporting just 1 inch had fallen by early Wednesday morning, but that it was still coming down. Across Anchorage, totals from from 1 inch (at Upper DeArmoun) to 7 inches (Tikishla Park) were reported as of 9 a.m., but at 1 p.m., snow is still falling across much of the city. The storm is expected to drop as many as 10 inches on Midtown.

One unfortunate Homer resident reported rain: "ARGH... sigh :("

Interior residents can submit reports here, Southcentral residents submit here. Read more about the current winter storm system.
