Anchorage's Sunrise Bakery, a landmark in Spenard since the 1960s, is closing as a result of the nationwide dissolution of Hostess Brands, according to the Anchorage Daily News.
The closure is happening quickly, said Anita-Marie Laurie, a Los Angeles-based spokesperson for Hostess.
Some 90 Anchorage jobs for people responsible for baking and distributing the products from the bakery will soon cease to exist.
"A very small group will be employed for a period of time to prepare the facility for shutdown," she said. "Everyone else has been asked to go home today."
Hostess Brands announced this week that it would be liquidating its assets and letting go some 18,000 workers nationwide. Its announcement closes with a note saying most of the affected workers would be able to collect government unemployment benefits.
The failed company's statement said the utter closure was "forced by a Bakers Union strike," but there is likely much more to the story. Hostess Brands has entered and emerged from bankruptcy twice since 2004, last emerging in 2009 after securing a capital infusion from a private equity firm. It again entered bankruptcy this year with debts and liabilities outstripping assets.
