Remote Alaska launches 'salmon finder' Facebook app and teaching social network

Bristol Bay group launches sockeye locator app on Facebook

The Bristol Bay Regional Seafood Development Association launched a unique new app on Facebook last week that allows users to pinpoint places where Bristol Bay sockeye salmon can be found for purchase.

The app is called Salmon Finder, and is a part of the Bristol Bay Sockeye Facebook page. The page has nearly 11,500 likes thus far.

The user can type in a zip code to find the nearest outlet for their favorite wild salmon, and if they know of a location that is not listed, they can tag it for others to view.

The app tags restaurants and retailers across the nation.

Aleutians East Borough creates own social networking site

In an effort to increase the communication across its far-reaching district, the Aleutians East Borough has launched its own private social networking site. It will bring together the teachers of its various isolated locations and allow them to collaborate and grow on a professional level, said superintendent Tim Mathis. It will also allow students to connect with peers in a controlled, password-protected environment. Users will be able to share and post about classroom projects and discuss current topics within their schools.
