Three-legged grizzly 'Tripawed' back at Denali National Park

According to the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, a grizzly bear spotted in Denali National Park last summer after losing most of its right foreleg in some unknown mishap has been seen again, apparently none the worse for wear.

Park workers have named the bear, suspected to be a young male, "Tripawed."

Last year he spent most of his time between the Park entrance and the Savage River Campground.

This year, Tripawed has been seen mainly around the entrance, and he even spent some time treating a roadkill caribou carcass as his own personal buffet.

"He showed up two weeks ago along the (Parks) highway," park wildlife biologist Pat Owen said. "He's been very visible. A lot of people have seen him already."

One of the first witnesses said Tripawed ran across the highway and lept over a guardrail.

"They said he looked very agile," Owen said. "I don't think he has any trouble getting around."
