Two Alaska-based Stryker soldiers killed in Afghanistan

According to KTUU-TV, two soldiers of the Fort Wainwright-based 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry, were killed in explosives attacks in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, over the weekend.

Sergeant First Class Johnathan B. McCain, 38, of Apache Junction, Ariz., was killed Sunday while on mounted patrol by insurgents who set off an improvised explosive device. McCain had served two previous combat tours in Iraq. Six of his comrades were also wounded during the attack.

Specialist Calvin Mathew Pareda, 21, of Fayetteville, N.C., succumbed Saturday to wounds he sustained in an insurgent IED attack against his unit on dismounted patrol. Two other soldiers were wounded in the attack.

McCain and Pareda's next of kin have been notified.
