Woman fatally shot during moose hunting trip

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports that a woman was fatally shot during a hunting trip near the interior community of Dot Lake, off the Alaska Highway, by her male hunting partner on Tuesday.

The pair was hunting for moose when the man accidentally shot the woman with a high-powered rifle, Trooper spokeswoman Beth Ipsen told the News-Miner. The man called 911, and medics who responded found her dead. Her body was flown to Anchorage for an autopsy, Ipsen said.

The incident remains under investigation. Neither the man nor woman has been identified.

Ipsen told the Anchorage Daily News that they "weren't even going out for the whole day. Just a short 'let's get out and go hunting trip.'"

Accidents in Alaska's vast wilderness can quickly turn to serious injuries or fatalities. On September 1, Cody Parry of Trapper Creek suffered a leg wound from an accidental shot from his hunting buddy, and died as a result from his injury.
