Why go anywhere else? Trout fishing can't be beat
A friend called last week to ask if I could recommend gear and flies for trout in Montana. He told me all about some phenomenal river he planned to fish. Naturally I had to ask why he was leaving Alaska to go fishing now.

Angling season's sweet spot has arrived
Summer visitors are gone, and traffic on Southcentral highways is easing after dipnet season. But the big halibut are just starting to show up, the late-run silvers are still out in the ocean and the best of the trout fishing is ahead. Yard work will have to wait.

For the first time this season, fishing is good all over
As you have surely noticed, our local fireweed is in full bloom. It is one of the most visible signs of the approaching end of summer. The higher the blooms on the stalk, the closer we are to winter. I'm happy to report that, according to the fireweed I'm looking at, we have a bunch of summer days...

Chums make way into Southcentral streams
If you want to take the kids out and experience a low-pressure day of fishing, give chums a go. Now is probably as good as any time to get out and wet a line for these fun fish. Meanwhile, there is good news for those fishing the lower Kenai River.

Ship Creek anglers are slaying silver salmon

Klutina, Gulkana rivers are nice alternatives to the Kenai
Most anglers are focused on the Kenai and catching reds. For a change of pace and fewer fishermen, the Klutina and Gulkana are nice alternatives. I took a road trip Sunday to the Klutina, where we had a heck of great day king fishing.

Kenai River sockeye salmon help end the summer's blues
After so many gloom-and-doom fishing reports -- especially after all the king closures -- I was starting to get a little negative. And then just like clockwork the Kenai sockeye show us why we live here: great fishing.

Anglers wonder: Where are all the king salmon?
Statewide low king returns should be a major concern to all of us. This summer has been the perfect storm in terms of weather and fishing. The only thing anglers can figure is: saltwater and lake fishing are somewhat normal, the weather and everything else are a roll of the dice.

Less than stellar fishing season continues in Southcentral
In addition to all those missing kings, fishing around Southcentral Alaska seems to be a bit in the doldrums -- although there are exceptions. High water in many streams is down to fishable or better levels.

More bad news: stream levels are high, additional king restrictions
The nice weather has increased the snowmelt, which is raising stream levels, and that's no benefit to anglers. Reds are showing up, but not in good numbers yet. King fishing is being restricted even further.
