What's up this weekend? Unity March, fishing, vintage planes and sorting tsunami debris

Marching for unity

A diverse group of Anchorage organizations have come together to put on a Unity March this Saturday, July 16. According to a release, the march is to "demonstrate togetherness and to pray for unity in our community." Speakers will include Governor Bill Walker, Alaska Federation of Natives President Julie Kitka and Pastor Leon May, president of the Martin Luther King Foundation.

The march will start at 10 a.m. at two locations: Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church (855 E. 20th Ave) and Fairview Recreation Center (1121 E. 10th Ave.). The two groups will meet and march down Ninth Avenue to the Martin Luther King Jr. memorial on the Delaney Park Strip. Organizers invite the public to participate — signs are welcome.

Pick your salmon

This weekend anglers can choose between silver, red, king, chum and pink salmon — and they don't have to venture far from Anchorage to score a silvery filet ready to barbecue. Silvers are nosing into Bird, Ship and Campbell creeks near Anchorage. King fishermen continue to score big on the Kenai River, and the second run of red salmon is in the Russian River. More and more chums and pinks are showing up at the mouths of Parks Highway streams from Willow Creek to Talkeetna. Don't be surprised if an early silver makes an appearance there, too.

The Great Alaska Marine Debris Sorting Project
