Heads up: An active aurora is forecast to dance across Alaska skies

It's a win-win for Alaskans: The weekend is here, and the aurora forecast is good.

If the weather cooperates, Alaskans may be able to see some lively northern lights dance across the skies on both Friday and Saturday.

The aurora forecast calls for active northern lights through the weekend, and especially Friday, according to the University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute.

A geomagnetic storm will be underway Friday evening, lasting through 1 a.m. early Saturday, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's space weather forecast.

Geomagnetic storms happen when solar particles, called coronal mass ejections, hit the Earth's atmosphere and create the aurora.

The forecast around Southcentral Alaska ranges from mostly cloudy to partly cloudy over the weekend – so look for those clear spots in the sky.
