Stranded Fairbanks man, 80, walks 10 miles before helicopter rescue

An 80-year-old Fairbanks man was rescued by an Alaska State Troopers helicopter after spending a night lost in the Bonanza Creek area after his boat drifted away.

William Page called troopers on his cellphone at 7:46 a.m. Sunday, according to an Alaska State Troopers dispatch posted online.

He said he'd become lost the previous evening when he attempted to walk out from a site along the Tanana River after his boat drifted away from him.

He told troopers he was on one of numerous logging roads north of the river, but was not sure of his exact location.

After a trooper in a patrol car failed to find him, an aerial search with a Fairbanks wildlife trooper located Page just before noon.

Page had walked 10 miles before troopers found him, but was uninjured.
