Man, child critically injured in Seward Highway crash

Two people were flown to an Anchorage hospital in critical condition after a two-vehicle crash involving a tractor-trailer on the Seward Highway near Summit Lake Tuesday evening, Alaska State Troopers said.

A dispatch on the crash identified the injured man and child as 30-year-old Jessie Johnson of Seward and an unnamed 5-year-old. The 54-year-old driver of the semi truck didn't report any injuries.

Word of the crash, at Mile 53 of the highway, reached troopers at about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. According to the dispatch, Johnson was driving a 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe in which the child was a passenger.

"(Johnson's Tahoe) was southbound on the Seward Highway when it ran into the rear of a semi-truck hauling double trailers that was also southbound," troopers wrote.

Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said both Johnson and the child were critically injured in the crash. They were flown from the scene by a LifeMed air ambulance.

The crash shut down the highway until about 9 p.m. Tuesday, when troopers said a single lane reopened to travel.
