Phone, internet outages affect GCI customers in urban Alaska

Some GCI customers have been been experiencing phone and internet issues Friday, as the Alaska telecommunications firm works through a series of repairs.

GCI spokesman David Morris said the internet problems, which were related to issues with the company's fiber-optic cable system, were first reported early Friday afternoon. Slowdowns occurred at the Alaska Dispatch News building at about 12:30 p.m.

Morris didn't have immediate estimates from technicians of how many people were affected or when it was likely to be repaired, but said the outage's nature made it unlikely to affect rural or Southeast Alaska.

"There is an outage affecting a certain type of customer, depending on how they're configured," Morris said. "This is fiber-based, so it's going to be the road system and mostly larger customers."

On Friday morning some GCI customers, including the ADN, experienced an issue in which voice-over-IP desk phones were able to receive voice but not transmit it. Morris said that problem, which was linked to a software issue, was resolved within an hour.
