U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor adds Anchorage stop to Alaska visit

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor is coming to Anchorage.

Sotomayor will participate in a public "conversation" sponsored by the Alaska Bar Association Wednesday, Aug. 17, at the Dena'ina Civic and Convention Center.

Sotomayor is one of eight justices currently serving on the nation's highest court. Her first public appearance will be a a talk in Fairbanks on Sunday as part of a free University of Alaska Fairbanks event at the Davis Concert Hall.

According to a Tuesday press release from the ABA, the Anchorage event will be guided by Judge Morgan Christen of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and include a question and answer session with attendees. People are encouraged to submit questions ahead of time.

ABA spokesperson Krista Scully said the program for the Anchorage talk is "evolving," but certain topics, including Sotomayor's opinions of her colleagues or issues before the court. or are likely to come before the court, are off-limits.

Scully said it's possible details about her personal life will be a topic of conversation.

"We're looking forward to whatever we learn about the justice," she said.

The event is open to the public. Tickets are $35 and available online.
