No. 1 meets No. 2 in grand opening of East football stadium

For the second week in a row, the East T-birds will play a football game featuring the state's No. 1 and No. 2 ranked teams.

This time, the T-birds are the team to beat. Last week they were ranked No. 2 heading into a road game against top-ranked Colony. No. 1.

East won 22-7 to knock Colony out of the Alaska Sports Broadcasting Network rankings and grab the top spot. The T-birds will try to hang onto that position Saturday afternoon when they entertain second-ranked Dimond.

The game will mark the grand opening of East's football stadium. The school will host a 2 p.m. tailgate party in the school's parking lot, followed by the game at 4 p.m.

Among those on hand will be members of the 1986, 1987 and 1988 football teams, winners of three straight state championships and architects of a state-record 29-game winning streak that stood until last season, when Soldotna broke it.

Soldotna's streak is still going. It reached 41 last week and will be on the line Friday night when the Stars hit the road for a game against the Wasilla Warriors.
