Troopers suspend search for Fairbanks man swept into river

Troopers have suspended an extensive search for a 27-year-old Fairbanks man last seen when he crashed his ATV into the Chatanika River on Friday.

Junior Leota of Fairbanks rolled his ATV into the Chatanika River at Olnes Pond Friday afternoon and was swept downriver, according to troopers.

Starting on Friday, a search party of about 100 volunteers combed river banks, helped by ATVs and boats from the Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Alaska State Parks, Fort Wainwright Fire Department, National Park Service, troopers said.

Trooper fixed-wing and helicopters, along with a Civil Air Patrol plane have been flying over the search area daily.

The search was suspended at 5 p.m. on Monday.

"Recovery efforts will reassess and resume with improving river conditions," troopers said in an online dispatch.
