Man dies after falling from kayak in lake near Cordova

A 21-year-old Cordova man died early Thursday after he fell from his kayak in nearby Eyak Lake and was unable to swim to shore, Alaska State Troopers said.

Zakary Zeigler had gone camping in the area with several other people, troopers said in an online statement. The group went kayaking and Ziegler fell out just before 4 a.m.

A woman jumped into the lake and tried unsuccessfully to save Ziegler. He was not wearing a life jacket, troopers said.

An Alaska wildlife trooper from Cordova and a U.S. Forest Service agent recovered Ziegler by boat. His body was transported to Anchorage at the request of the State Medical Examiner, troopers said.
