California woman dies in Sterling Highway collision

A California woman died Sunday evening when her car collided with two vehicles on the Sterling Highway near Kasilof, Alaska State Troopers said.

Nancy Virlee Christiansen, 60, of Emerald Hills, California, was driving northbound in a blue 2019 Hyundai when it crossed the center line and collided with a black 2016 Nissan Murano driven by 51-year-old Heather Lynn Turkington of Clam Gulch, troopers wrote in an online statement. The crash happened near Mile 111 around 6:25 p.m., troopers said.

Christiansen’s car then collided head-on with a red 2016 Chevrolet pickup driven by 62-year-old Henry Kurgan of Anchorage, troopers said.

“Christiansen suffered serious injury and was reported deceased,” troopers said.

Kurgan and a passenger in his truck had minor injuries, and Turkington was not hurt, troopers said.

Troopers said they are are investigating the circumstances leading up to the crash.
