Juneau man found dead after he was reported overdue from hiking, police say

A Juneau man who was last known to be hiking near a popular trail system on Saturday was found dead Monday, police said.

Douglas Shockley, 63, was reported to have gone hiking around noon Saturday in the Dredge Lake area, Juneau police wrote in an online statement.

Shockley was hiking alone and was believed to be headed toward a lake that required going off the main trail, Lt. Krag Campbell said. It was common for Shockley to hike in the area, police said. Campbell described the Dredge Lake area as a popular trail system that branches out into multiple smaller routes. It is part of the Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area.

Shockley did not return home Friday night and his vehicle was parked overnight near the trail on Back Loop Road, police wrote. He was reported missing Sunday and police, troopers and local rescue groups searched the area, police wrote.

The cause of death was not immediately clear, but Campbell said there were no signs of trauma to Shockley’s body. The Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy, Campbell said.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.
