Injured Canadian hiker flown to hospital after Flattop fall

A Canadian hiker who suffered a leg injury in a fall on Anchorage's Flattop Mountain was airlifted to safety Monday evening.

Reports of 39-year-old Alberta resident Stephan Greene's fall reached Alaska State Troopers shortly before 7 p.m. Monday, the agency said in a dispatch. Troopers contacted the 11th Air Force's Rescue Coordination Center to request National Guard support.

"Once at the scene and through an interview with another hiker on site, it was determined that RCC support was necessary due to the terrain and type of injury suffered by the hiker," troopers wrote.

Troopers spokesman Tim DeSpain said a helicopter was called for Greene due to his lack of mobility.

The HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopter crew that conducted the rescue was on a training exercise before heading to Flattop, Alaska National Guard officials said in a statement.

"After crew from the helo spotted the injured hiker at about 8:25 p.m., the pair of pararescuemen hoisted down, assessed the hiker's medical condition, splinted his leg, loaded him onto a stokes litter and hoisted him into the aircraft," Guard officials wrote.

"The Alaska Air National Guard's 210th Rescue Squadron … transported him to Providence (Alaska Medical Center), where he was treated and released," troopers said.
