Suspect arrested, female injured in Government Hill apartment standoff

Update, 1 p.m. Tuesday: A man who barricaded himself in an apartment on Government Hill has been arrested on assault charges, after an injured woman who was in the room with him was able to leave.

Police spokeswoman Renee Oistad said at about 1 p.m. that Marcus Johnson, 38, was charged with one count of third-degree assault and two counts of fourth-degree assault following his surrender to police.

"He was taken into custody; he responded to negotiators," Oistad said.

Officers had responded to the North Pointe Apartments at 905 Richardson Vista Road shortly after initial calls reporting an altercation between a male and female in the apartment. Witnesses told arriving officers that the male had been waving a knife and making threats.

The injured woman who was in the apartment was able to leave the unit before Johnson's eventual arrest.

"There were injuries to her — not anything she had to go to the hospital for, but she appeared to have injuries when she left the apartment," Oistad said.

Police said in a statement that calls first began coming in from the North Pointe Apartments, at 905 Richardson Vista Road, shortly after 8:30 a.m. reporting "an altercation occurring in an apartment between a male and female."

"Police arrived at (the building) and made contact with witnesses who stated the suspect male had been waiving a knife around and making verbal threats," police wrote. "Police have been unable to make visual contact with the female to determine whether or not she's been harmed. The male has refused to exit the apartment."

No road closures have been reported in the area, but police said part of a parking lot in the immediate vicinity of the building has been closed.
