Decomposed body found in woods near Tikahtnu Commons shopping center

Police are investigating the discovery of a body near a Northeast Anchorage shopping complex Thursday evening.

According to police spokeswoman Jennifer Castro, a construction worker reported finding the decomposed body in woods near the Sam's Club store at Tikahtnu Commons shortly after 5 p.m. Thursday.

"There was no sign of identification," Castro wrote. "The medical examiner responded and took custody of the body. There was nothing immediately suspicious in the area and police are waiting on an autopsy to get an identity confirmation and the nature of death."

The worker who discovered the body was on a crew helping expand the nearby Glenn Highway-Muldoon Road interchange, Castro said. It wasn't clear how long the body had been there. Only personal possessions were found at the scene.

"It looks like an adult," Castro said.

Investigators didn't find any immediately apparent links between the body and open missing-persons cases in Anchorage.

"We need to see who this person is, and see if there's anything else associated with that individual," Castro said.
