Suspect comes forward after man is struck and killed in Midtown Anchorage

A suspect has been arrested in a deadly hit-and-run after police say he called authorities and said he was the driver who struck a man in Midtown Anchorage early Monday.

The man was taken into custody and brought to the Anchorage Police Department for questioning, according to a brief statement from police Monday night. His name and charges will be made public once he has been formally charged.

The victim's name is being withheld until next of kin are notified, police said.

The hit-and-run happened around 5:30 a.m. at the intersection of Northern Lights Boulevard and the Seward Highway. A car was heading west on Northern Lights and hit a man in the road on the east side of the Seward Highway intersection, Anchorage police said.

"Initial indications are that victim was struck at or near the cross walk, and was driven through the intersection, before he became dislodged from the vehicle," an APD statement said. He was declared dead at the scene.

The car continued westbound on Northern Lights, police said.

Police later described the car as a 1997-1999 gold Nissan Maxima with an inoperable driver's side tail light, likely with extensive damage to the windshield.

The northbound lanes of the Seward Highway from Fireweed Lane to Benson Boulevard were closed while police investigated Monday morning, along with the westbound lanes of Northern Lights near the intersection. The intersection had reopened by 10:30 a.m. Monday.
