Expect police near Old Seward and DeArmoun during FBI-led training Thursday

A federal training session for Alaska law enforcement officers on responding to the abduction of a child will bring a "large police presence" Thursday to part of South Anchorage.

The Anchorage Police Department said in a statement that the FBI-led event, near Old Seward Highway and DeArmoun Road, will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Previous sessions took place Tuesday afternoon near Fifth Avenue and Bunnell Street, and Wednesday afternoon in the Goldenview area of the Anchorage Hillside.

An overview of the training, provided by FBI spokeswoman Staci Feger-Pellessier, said about 50 officers from across Alaska are being instructed in Anchorage this week.

"The training will provide attending agencies with the necessary skills and investigative techniques to successfully respond to a child abduction incident," Feger-Pellessier wrote. "Classroom instruction will take place at the state of Alaska Crime Laboratory; street practical exercises will take place in two Anchorage neighborhoods."

Members of the bureau's Behavioral Analysis Unit and Child Abduction Rapid Deployment Team are conducting the sessions.
