A car ran a red light in Anchorage last weekend, hitting a truck that spun and struck a man, police say

Anchorage police have released a few new details about the two-vehicle collision in Midtown last Saturday that sent a man to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

While police continue to investigate the crash, they believe it started with a car running a red light at the intersection of West 36th Avenue and C Street, MJ Thim, a spokesman for the Anchorage Police Department, said Friday.

That car, a sedan, was traveling westbound on West 36th Avenue around 12:45 p.m. May 19 when it slammed into a pickup that was traveling southbound on C Street, he said. The pickup spun and smacked into a man who was standing on the sidewalk, waiting to cross the street.

"The truck spun around and hit him like a baseball bat would hit a baseball," Thim said. "He was hit and fell back and was critically injured."

The man was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police have not identified the man or the drivers of either of the vehicles involved in the collision.

Thim said police couldn't provide updated information Friday about the condition of the man hit. He said police only publicly release an updated condition if a person has died as a result of their injuries.

No one had been charged in the collision by Friday evening, Thim said. He said the investigation continued into the circumstances of the crash.

"Drugs and alcohol have not been ruled out," he said. Police were waiting for blood test results.
