Fire damages home near downtown Anchorage

A Fairview house was damaged by fire Sunday morning, but officials said no one was thought to have been injured.

Firefighters were called to the single-family home near the intersection of Ingra Street and 12th Avenue around 11 p.m. on Sunday morning, said Anchorage Fire Department Acting Captain Andy Harvey. Roughly nine units responded, he said.

By about noon, limited smoke and some flames could be seen coming from an attic. Firefighters used a lift and tools to break through the shingles and insulation to fight the blaze.

Firefighters believe that the house was unoccupied at the time of the fire, Harvey said.

As of 12:30 p.m. firefighters had controlled most of the fire in the house but were still putting out lingering hot spots in hidden areas, such as the attic, Harvey said. A representative of the American Red Cross interviewed three people sitting away from the house.

The cause of the fire, extent of the damage to the house and number of people displaced were not clear as of Sunday night.
