Valley duo arrested in van theft that led to dog’s death

Two people have been charged with the theft in Palmer last week of a van containing a dog, which was later found dead inside the vehicle.

Wasilla resident Jason McDonnell, 35, and Palmer resident Gina Jones, 36, are each charged with two counts of theft plus one count of animal cruelty, vehicle theft and misconduct involving weapons.

Troopers first received a report that the 1999 Dodge van had been stolen from a site on Fireweed Road in Palmer at about 8:30 p.m. July 10.

"A golden retriever dog and a firearm were located inside the vehicle at the time of theft," troopers wrote. "On (July 13), troopers located the vehicle abandoned near Hideaway Circle containing the deceased dog."

The dog had died from heatstroke, troopers said.

Jones and McDonnell, who were found and arrested Monday, were held at the Mat-Su Pretrial Facility on $30,000 cash bail each. Both require a court-approved third-party custodian for their release.
